Kate McNeil and Max Gail

Way back in 2011, the very first topic we ever covered in this tribute to wonderful film and television star Kate McNeil was her appearance on the TV anthology series Amazing Stories. This remains one of her finest guest roles and, to remind everyone of this fact, here is a great promotional photo:

I think that this amazing photograph of Kate McNeil speaks for itself...wow!

More on Kate McNeil in Vital Signs

We've already taken two brief looks (here and here) at Kate McNeil in the 1986 TV movie Vital Signs. Well, it's time to have a glance at the project again!

Vital Signs was a made-for-television movie that originally aired on CBS in early 1986. Besides the lovely Kate McNeil, the rest of the principal cast was comprised of Gary Cole, Ed Asner and Barbara Barrie. The plot revolved around the problems faced by a pair of father-son doctors and their wives. Unfortunately, Vital Signs is one of those TV movies that never received much attention in the first place and was subsequently lost in the vast glut of 1980s television.

Kate McNeil on Promised Land

In 1997, Kate McNeil was a guest star on the TV series Promised Land. In the episode 'To Everything a Season', the actress played the sister of Wendy Phillips, one of the stars of the show.

The scenario here was simple. Kate McNeil's character Laura, unable to have a baby, must reconcile herself (and convince her husband) that adopting a child is the best and only solution. Her husband was played by actor Michael Reilly Burke.

Kate McNeil in Escape Clause

In 1996, Kate McNeil was one of the stars of Escape Clause. The film originally premiered on the Showtime cable network and was helmed by famed Australian cult movie director Brian Trenchard-Smith.

Kate McNeil only appears in the first 30 minutes or so of Escape Clause. She goes missing and eventually we find that she has been brutally murdered. Andrew McCarthy plays her husband in the film and he spends the bulk of the movie trying to figure out who killed her (meanwhile the audience is left to wonder if maybe he killed Kate McNeil's character). Paul Sorvino plays the detective on the case and Connie Britton plays Kate McNeil's longtime friend. Escape Clause unfolds as a whodunit with every character as a suspect in Kate McNeil's character's murder. If you are a fan of Kate McNeil, you may also wish to know that she has two (somewhat graphic) sex scenes in the film and this fact alone may prompt you to watch it!

Kate McNeil on Dear John

Kate McNeil did not have a very busy 1991. In the early months of that year, the final episodes of her short-lived show WIOU aired before the show was unceremoniously cancelled. she didn't really do much else on film or TV that year except for a guest role on the NBC sitcom Dear John. In the episode "Kirk's Wife" Kate McNeil appears as...Kirk's wife. Actor Jere Burns plays Kirk, one of the central characters on the show, and Kate McNeil plays Carol, his ex-wife. Carol discovered after they were married that she was a lesbian and she left Kirk for a woman (a sore spot for the macho Kirk).

For her guest appearance on Dear John, Kate McNeil had only two scenes, one at the beginning of the episode and another at the very end. She does very well with her limited screen time, looking fabulous and handling her material with ease. Overall, this was a very humorous episode and also one with an excellent message of tolerance as Kirk comes to terms with his gay ex-wife.

Clip of Kate McNeil on Diagnosis Murder

Here's a clip of Kate McNeil as guest star on an episode of Diagnosis Murder in 1996. She shares her scenes her with the show's stars, Dick and Barry Van Dyke. However, she also appears with another great actress...herself! In this episode, Kate McNeil is given the opportunity to play twins!
